Group of related languages spoken widely
over the greater part of Africa south of
the Sahara, including Swahili, Xhosa,
and Zulu. Meaning `people' in Zulu,
the word Bantu itself illustrates a
characteristic use of prefixes: mu-ntu `man',
ba-ntu `people'. The Bantu-speaking peoples
probably originated in N Central Africa.
Until 1978, the black people of the Republic
of South Africa were officially designated
Bantu(s).
